Old Technology:
Gasoline Engine
- The conventional engine in the majority of cars today. This type of engine burns gasoline.

Firewood- Firewood is burnt to heat houses, light homes, and cook.

Coal- Coal is burnt in big factories to power the plants.

Natural Gas- Natural gas is drilled with crude oil. It is a mixture of ethane, propane, and methane. The mixture contains 73-95% methane. It was used as a light source with oil lamps in Europe and North America during the 19th century.


New Technology:
Hybrid Technology
- Engines in vehicles that couples the power of electric and the conventional internal combustion engine that burn gasoline.

Ethanol Engine- An engine that burns ethanol which comes from the corn plant. Ethanol burns much cleaner (less C02 emitted) that conventional unleaded gasoline.

Electric Engine- An engine that does burn any liquid for energy but instead uses a big and powerful battery that just plugs into a wall socket in a garage.

Nuclear Energy- "
Of all the major forms of energy now in use, only nuclear power has truly modern roots. The central insight--that the controlled fission of heavy elements could release enormous energies" (June 27, 2007,EIA).

Renewable Energy- Used for centuries but not for electricity, taking energy through water and wind. By hydroelectric plants and wind- driven mills.


  • Describe how technology has changed the use of natural resources by business and industry and Analyze the effect of natural resource conservation on a product over time (e.g., automobile manufacturing, aluminum can recycling, paper products).

Factories have new ways to way burn the fossil fuels. The newly developed systems to burn the fuels capture a percentage of the toxic chemicals released by the process. The relationship between recycling a product over time and the amount a natural resource is taken is inverse. For example, the more paper products and aluminum cans are recycled clear cutting whole forests at a time and increasing mining of aluminum is not necessary.


  • Explain how technology has decreased the use of raw natural resources and Explain how technology has impacted the efficiency of the use natural resources.

New technologies are researched more and more with the global warming phenomenom. Renewable energies like wind and water power are being put into place instead of burning fossil fuels. "For someone who drives less than 40 miles a day, Chevy Volt will use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions" (2008, Chevy). The Chevy Volt is electric engine powered car which only uses gasoline or ethonol to recharge the battery of the car. Hybrid cars reduce natural resource usage by combining electric engines with gasoline engines working at once. Fuel cell engines are also being produced and probably have to most potential to succeed. They use hydrogen fuel cells to power get power. Another new technology for cars is E85 ethanol fuel which is produced from corn. Nuclear power plants use a fraction of resources to get energy. They produce the most energy by far of all other ways to release energy. All of these ways to produce energy increase the efficiency of natural resources because wherever they are used it will be when it is absolutely needed. With cars taking up less of the natural resources industries can use it and not worry about it running out on them.



  • Analyze the role of technology in the reduction of pollution.
The hybrid, fuel cell, and electric powered cars all have a potential zero emissions of the dangerous cocktail of ozone killing produced by conventional engines. The E85 ethanol powered cars have some emissions but the fuel burns much cleaner. The emissions will have much less percentage of dangerous stuff than the gasoline burning engines. Nuclear power plants are a environmentalists nightmare. The waste produced from the plants have to be stored in underground facilities and closely monitored because it is very radioactive and toxic. It has to be watched for thousands of years.
